Where is everybody?

Published by: mrlmd on 7th Dec 2009 | View all blogs by mrlmd
There's 923 members listed on this site. Nobody has anything to say, to ask, to report? No questions about maintenance, repairs, mods, gear? No suggestions or advice to give? No comments or reports on new "stuff" they got for their bikes or for themselves? No interesting rides, adventures?
I can't believe we're all that smart or all that dull.

We need more participation on here, IMHO. We need to be more active, we need to be able to hook up with each other, mentally/physically, to get to know each other in these forums, and maybe also go for group rides ? or other meetings with close-by members, maybe see and visit other members on our longer trips as we pass through.
We are a community, a family of sorts, with a common interest, and I think it would be nice to hear from a larger portion of the membership once in a while, even to just report in and say hello.

Am I the only one who feels this way?
Let's see what kind of feedback or response this gets.

You're not the only one wh feels that way. I'd love to spend more time on the site and I'd love to arrange ride-outs with other members. Unfortunately I have a job, wife and family that all have to take precidence over my riding or web use. I try to ride my bike (1979 Honda CB750KZ) every day but usually only manage short rides of about an hour or so. The only time I get to go online is when my daughters have gone to bed because they monopolise the computer when they're awake.

Good point. My bike is parked for the winter so you'd think I would have the time. Actually I do. BTW mrlmd, I like your choice of bikes.

There are times when one just knows that the best thing to do is park the bike for the winter. Here, although we haven't had much snow, we have been having cold conditions with lots of rain, freezing on road surfaces and causing some of the local highways to be closed because of conditions that spawned multiple accidents. Not a good time to be out on the bike. HOWEVER, sitting at home in front of my computer, I can spend some time posting information and stories on 2wheeltips! :)

Thundurburd, I love my S50 and I like your bike too. Any more of these on here? We could start our own subgroup.

Before 2005 the S50 was called the VS800 Intruder and has be in production since 1985. It has now been discontinued but a few more will be made from remaining inventories of parts and badged as 2010 models from what I've heard. A really nice bike in my opinion.

That's also a great bike. All the Suzukis, S's, M's, C's, are loved by their loyal owners, because they are really good bikes. Not to say anything derogatory about the Hondas, Yamahas, Kawasakis, and everybody else (including Harleys and Ducatis, etc), they are all great bikes. It all comes down to different sizes, different colors, different strokes, for different folks. We're all in this together and we all love to ride.

This is the rule of one percent in action my friends. All collaborative websites (Wikipedia is a great example) operate within 1% rule. “1% rule” states that only 1% of the members will actually contribute to the website. The remaining 99% are what we call “lurkers”. This of course if perfectly fine. Humans are voyeuristic by nature so in my humble opinion the question is not necessarily “why aren’t more people contributing” (tho that would be wonderful), the question is “how can we increase the membership say 10 fold” which would then make for a very active site with many people commenting and even more lurkers. Ideas welcomed.

When I started this blog 6 weeks ago, we had 923 members. Now we're up to 1061, so we must be doing something right. Spread the word, the more members, the more participation on here, the better it gets.

Glad to hear someone else feels the way that I do. I was looking forward to joining this group to make connections/friendships and to possibly find groups or people to hook up with during the riding months. There never seems to be anyone active. I'll try to spread the word and find more members too!

Hummm, glad to know that I am a 1% in the biker's world. Thanks, Dino! Maybe when we log on and see others log on to say hello. That within itself and be a plus or minus. Let's say one has a spouse looking over their shoulder and all of sudden this other person of the other sex begans to chat. It could cause problems and maybe not. Say "Hello" and welcome new members and send them a message saying "Welcome." I got hooked when I got ready to take a trip to Americade and started asking questions and got answers. Thanks for raising the question. It is some organizations where 20% of the people do all the work. It is all good. Members of two wheel tips have been very friendly, kind, helpful, and insightful.
