Here are some disturbing statistics.

People killed in motorcycle accidents for the years
2005=4,553
2006=4,810
2007=5,174
2008=5,290
How come the numbers are going up?

People injured in motorcycle accidents for the years
2005=87,000
2006=88,000
2007=103,000
2008=96,000
What happened in 2007 to cause the spike in injuries?

Lets brainstorm and come up with ideas to lower these numbers in 2010.

What can we do about this?
How low do you think we can get these numbers?

    Dino Hi,

    I was riding down one of Ankeny's (Iowa) residential streets a few months ago on a perfectly beautiful Saturday morning in very light traffic. I was following a Big Honkin Electic Blue Pick-up truck with oversized chrome wheels. I was following a safe distance behind as we approached a side street where a Pontiac GrandAm was waiting at the stop sign to pull out on to the street me and the blue truck were on. Just at the blue truck gets to this intersection the GrandAm pulls out and hits the truck broadside. I mean right dead center in the side of the truck...BOOM! Two teeny boppers were in the GrandAm with their cell phone in hand looking like they had no idea what in the world they had just done.

    If people are so distracted they can't see an electic blue truck the size of a tank and run into the side of it, well, we just don't stand a chance on a motorcylce!! It was truly unbelieveable to witness this and to think I could have easily been where the truck was. Reggie

    I am sure this is a familiar story for many people, Reggie! It never ceases to amaze me what people DON'T see when driving!! Scary and sobering. We must all ride our bikes assuming we are NOT seen by other people on the road. It isn't a cure all but, in my opinion, it does help. I use my horn as an attention grabber. One of the upgrades I would like to do is get an air horn. One just might be seen if one is HEARD!! Carol

    wow...that is an incredible story Reggie ....and yes, both you and Carol are right....what chance do we have if drivers cant see a truck? What can we do - as an online community - to raise awareness and lower these numbers? I know in England they have billboards and traffic signs reminding drivers to pay attention to bikers. Would something like that work here in US and does anyone know the effectiveness of it in England?
