Good to see that anything can happen! Two years ago , coming back on the route 9a from Lake George to Montréal at about 10 pm we almost hit a big turtle in the middle of the lane in a curve, pretty scary surprise!!

Yes, the cardinal rule of riding is expect the unexpected!!

One of the biggest hazards we are experiencing in Iowa right now are deer strikes. I've been consistently seeing 2 to 4 dead deer on the side of the road each morning on my way to work. They pose a serious threat to riders because they are hard to see and behave erratically which makes any evasive manuever a "crap shoot" at best. The slogan here is "don't veer for deer" and for good reason. More people are killed going off the road and hitting something worse than if they had simply braked hard and hit the deer. Tough decision to make on a bike in a split second!! I like to do role playing in my mind while I'm both riding and driving to mentally prepare for how I would react if Bambi unexpectedly jumped in my path and wanted to kiss my headlight. By the way does anyone have a good recipe for venison stew?

Tony, Deer taste very similar to antelope but they are far more elusive so try your luck with deer first. I would suggest shooting one during hunting season versus becoming intimate with them on your ride. (actually I love deer meat but some people think it tastes to "gamey".)

Tony venison is delicious. Hit my deer 2 years ago on route 22 on way home from work at 3:30 AM. Was doing 50 mph coming out of a turn and an eight point buck ran right out in front of me. Hit it broad side and was immediately on the ground. My first conscious thought was hey this armor in the elbow really works. I do recommend avoinding deer strikes whenever possible. Of course the bike is now named the deer slayer, it had thirteen humdred miles on it and sustained $5000 worth of damage. Thank God for insurance. It was painful but good gear saves lives. The hospital inspite of me telling them not to filed it under my motorcycle insurance, in stead of my health insurance and it took a while to straighten out the billing, but alls well that ends well.
