Unbreakable clutch and brake levers

I've seen a few ads for clutch and brake levers that do not bend or break when you drop your bike. I've always wondered why the standard levers bend. I've been told that they bend to minimize the damage to the bike.

Anyone out there buy these new (and expensive) unbreakable, unbendable levers? If so, can you let us know how they work and if they are worth the extra money.
